Xiaomi is a brand famous for affordable smartphones. Has stepped into the automotive sector with the launch of its first-ever electric car, Xiaomi SU7. Available in three distinct colors – “aqua blue,” gray, and olive green – the SU7 boasts unique design elements, including “water droplet” headlamps resembling the Chinese character for “rice” (mi in Xiaomi) and a halo rear brake light consisting of 360 LEDs.

One of the standout features of the SU7 is its advanced “super electric motor” technology, capable of reaching up to 21,000rpm, surpassing the acceleration of Tesla and Porsche’s electric vehicles. The lineup includes two variants: the dual-motor all-wheel-drive SU7 Max and the single-motor rear-wheel-drive SU7. The SU7 Max, equipped with a 101kWh 800V high-voltage platform from battery maker CATL, offers an impressive range of up to 800km (497 miles) on a single charge, according to the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. The base model, featuring a 73.6kWh battery, provides a range of up to 668km (415 miles).

Xiaomi has tackled the charging challenge with the SU7 by incorporating CATL’s 101kWh 800V high-voltage platform. This technology enables rapid charging, offering a 220km range with just a 5-minute charge, 390km in 10 minutes, and 510km in 15 minutes. The base model supports 400V charging for its smaller battery. This emphasis on charging speed and efficiency positions the SU7 as a formidable competitor in the EV market.

The system offers quick boot times, taking just 1.49 seconds, and supports up to three split windows for multitasking. Users can control various functions.  Including media playback and seat adjustments, and even interact with Xiaomi appliances through the central screen.

The entertainment experience is further enhanced by 23 internal Dolby Atmos speakers, ensuring a premium audiovisual experience for passengers. Optional Xiaomi Pad tablets, mountable on magnetic ports behind the front headrests, provide additional functionality with up to 22.5W output.

The SU7 incorporates Xiaomi’s Pilot platform, powered by up to two NVIDIA Drive Orin processors, providing autonomous driving capabilities. Lei Jun, Xiaomi’s CEO, envisions completing autonomous driving tests in 100 cities across China by the end of 2024. The company aims to demonstrate the SU7’s adaptability to varied climates, showcasing its sensors’ effectiveness in snowy and rainy conditions.
